A Newsvine Primer

Newsvine is about to open the floodgates and the initial rush of new seeds, posts and members will mean that a lot of people are going to be completely adrift in a sea of confusion. Newsvine is a great tool, but I can certainly understand why some of you might decide that it's too difficult to really settle in and make yourselves at home. Information overload is an understandable side-effect of Newsvine. With this in mind, I've decided to write the introduction that I wish someone had written before I was invited:

  1. Take a deep breath and jump right in.

It really isn't that scary, once you get over the sheer amount of upfront information that you're assaulted with. The bulk of the front page is AP stories that are automatically seeded to Newsvine. The rest of the content is a mixture of seeds and posts (Stories linked by Newsvine members and stories written by Newsvine members, respectively.)

  2. Read the FAQ and the Code of Honor before you do anything else.

    1. Newsvine FAQ

    2. Newsvine Code of Honor

  3. Contribute.

It doesn't really matter how you contribute, but Newsvine will be at it's best when it's members do their part as well. Reading is certainly one way to contribute (and I'll certainly appreciate it if you read my content) but seeding, posting and commenting are better than merely browsing. More content from a wider variety of members is a good thing. (And vital to Newsvine's success.) It's also important that you vote for posts, seeds and comments if you think they add something of value to Newsvine. (This is clearly a personal decision on your part but I suggest that you think before you vote.) In the same vein; report posts, seeds and comments if they don't seem to add value, are inflammatory or if they're advertising. Both of these simple tasks will help moderate quality on Newsvine.

  4. Read the Code of Honor again!

In fact, you might want to write it down and/or memorize it. Knowing it forwards and backwards will help you moderate your own writing and the comments that you have to deal with when you eventually post or seed an article. I won't mention it again but just assume that I want you to have it in mind at all times.

  5. Set up a watchlist and some regions.

Newsvine is still in it's infancy and you can bet that there are more customization features on the way. In the meantime, take advantage of the ability to watch certain regions, tags and members. I currently watch the following:

Tags and Regions: art, evolution, Kansas City

Authors: bobbi, The Newsvine Blog, Simran, theannalog

This is certainly a personal choice for every member to make, but I would at the very least suggest watching the official Newsvine blog. It's a good resource if you want to keep up with new features as they are unveiled. (Sometimes before they're unveiled. It happens to the best of us.) I suppose you could get away without a watchlist but as I mentioned with my first point; you'll just feel less intimidated if you have one. It's also a great way to make sure you don't miss any content that you know you'll enjoy. (It's like tivo!) I'm adding new people as I find them and new tags as I think of them, but am fairly conservative with who and what makes my list. (Actually, there are some people that I really need to add but haven't gotten around to doing so.)

  6. Do not feel as though you won't get noticed.

Write good content and seed good articles and exposure will follow. (This will be achieved by writing on topics that you're passionate about. Don't write on a whim, and focus on quality over quantity. My posts about entertainment topics are usually better than my political posts.) I would also note that I did not start with Newsvine right from the beginning and have managed to post articles that have generated great discussions by a diverse group of people. It isn't necessary to write sensationalist headlines and posts in order to drive discussion and earn page hits. In fact, I have found that the best discussions have been on the posts that were the least sensational. I've also found that commenting is a great way to get noticed. The more people see your name, the more likely they will be to read your articles and seeds. The first thing I do when I see an interesting comment is look to see if that person has posted interesting articles. I have at least one person on my watchlist that earned their spot in this manner.

  7. Build up a dialogue and familiarity with other Newsvine members.

It's much easier to take criticism from people you like. (And if you don't like them, you can at least respect them.) At the same time, it's easier to "give" criticism if you can do it constructively and not feel that you're going to hurt someone's feelings. I've written at least one article that turned out to be something of a learning experience in dealing with negative comments. I'm still not sure I handled it wrong per se, but I think I certainly could have handled it better. Having familiar faces sprinkled throughout the comments kept me grounded, and it's nice when people have your back. The best way to earn familiarity is to comment as often as possible on original content. (Which is not to say that commenting on AP stories will not work as well.) I would also note that building up a dialog will be much easier if you post some information in your "about this author" section and include an avatar of some kind. I think people are more likely to make contact with users who include this information.

  8. Ultimately, you own your column; don't abuse that power. (But don't be a pushover, either.)

Essentially, people are more likely to continue reading your content if they feel that you respect their positions. Be open-minded and allow discussion to happen. Do not try and dictate discussion unless it derails. (This will happen, so just learn to handle it as best you can. I have found that threatening trolls just makes things worse. I've adjusted my technique to a sarcastic "written" roll-of-the-eyes in response to negative comments and this tends to make them give up and move on.) I suppose it'll help if you've ever read The Prince by Machiavelli. (Or maybe the Art of War.)

  9. Don't be an elitist or negative and think that this is original.

We already have those guys, so don't be that guy. (Or gal.) Just realize right off the bat that if you're here to cause trouble, your comments will be removed. There is a modicum of moderation from the Newsvine team (and even by Newsvine members) and they will exercise this right as a last resort. Call it censorship if you need to, but the fact of the matter is that no one else really cares that your negativity has been removed or that it offends you that you're being censored. For the rest of us, it's the lesser of two evils.

  10. Make suggestions.

The Newsvine team will take them into account. Mykola Bilokonsky is a great example of a person who writes more about how to make Newsvine better than he does about anything else. His posts always get a great response and the newsvine team apparently jokes about hiring him as a result. (Yes, I'm jealous.) (I just added him to my watchlist as I've been meaning to do so for some time but keep forgetting.) As an aside, this is also a great way to get noticed. Fortunately, the Newsvine team have been very visible up to this point. (They're more like the Greek Gods of antiquity than the God of the New Testament. Though, if you want to make that comparison, I guess Calvin is a sort of a Jesus figure. He's everywhere and people seem to listen to him pretty well; he sort of throws himself to the wolves on a lot of occasions.) I'm hoping that this visibility remains constant because their presence certainly motivates (and moderates) quality discussion.

  11. If you're not sure, ask!

I can't stress this enough. You're going to be confused about something. Write a post about it or simply contact the Newsvine team. I've done so on several occasions and always receive a timely and informative reply. (Usually from more than one person.) If you choose to write a post, the response is usually just as timely and just as informative.

I think that's about it. I would mention that something that we haven't seen a lot of yet is actual news reporting. There tends to be a lot of editorializing and while this is a good thing (in my opinion) the first person who makes their name by writing investigative journalism will be very popular on Newsvine.

Hello Terry.

...would also like to post my bio,on my page. But there isn't any place to click on...

Go to the black bar near the top of the page, [you'll see your newsvine name on the left-hand side of it]. Look halfway across that and you'll see 'Account'...click on that and you will be redirected to the page where you can fill in your personal info, 'one line bio' and 'full Bio'.

Cheers.

Frequently I want to Reply to a post but the REPLY button isn't there. How do you get the REPLY button to come up?

There's a Reply button on the first comment of each thread, and at the end of the thread. You have to scroll down slowly or you'll miss it, especially on long threads. Sometimes advertisements separate the threads, but not always.

Hi, when I first signed on I changed some things on my account and I am not sure how to "unchange" them, I would like to add back the links next to the photo area for friends, etc. When I first signed on there were links next to the photo, I removed them and would like to put them back?

I would also like to remove some on my Watchlist, I read the help, but I do not see the area next to those on my Watchlist I want to remove.

On the left, next to where your name is, click on "customize column", then look on the right side for "about Michael-527485". Click on edit just below that. You'll see it. You'll have to backspace through the whole thing, and start over with something completely different, at least that was my experience.

And I hope you're not doing this because you're trying to hide a bad reputation, because I'm writing you're name down.

      Hi Beth,

Users can only change their own names within the first three months of joining Newsvine. After that, it must be done internally, and is really only granted in certain cases (for instance, if you've been using your real name and would like to change to an alias of some sort, or if you've been using an alias and want to use your real name).

To get your name changed, click the Contact link at the bottom of any Newsvine page or the Report Bug button up top right and choose "Change domain or display name" from the drop-down menu. State your case for why you'd like your name changed and please include at least three possibilities, just in case your first choice is already taken (saves a lot of back and forth emails).

Often, it is required that those changing their names do something to notify other users (like announce the change in the header of their column for a week or so). It really depends on the circumstance.

That's because you're supposed to read it, not activate it. Every name on Your Watchlist has a "-" behind it. Follow the instructions.

Actually, they put a hyphen, "-", in the instructions, but appear to use a dash, "─", in the list.

I wouldn't think it would matter, but there is this:

(Upload an avatar to represet your group. Final dimensions
when resized will be 120 pixels wide by 120 pixels tall.)

That seems to suggest it'll resize a bigger image, though.

              Is your avatar CMYK?

(That used to cause issues for me.)

I wrote a comment to a news article, then decided to add to it. Now, both my comments are publicly viewable.

Is there a way for an author to delete/withdraw/cancel something (as there is in Twitter)?

No, we cannot withdraw a comment once we've made it.

We have a small window of time to *edit* a comment (in which case you could simply delete the content and remark that you did so) but once that has passed, a comment can only be deleted by the author of the seed or article.

You could contact the author of the seed or article by using the "Contact This Author" link at their column page and ask for your erroneous comment to be deleted. Then when that has gone, you can then add your new edited comment.

              Here is a good tip:

Compose your message in windows notepad or even a word processor like MS Word or Lotus Word Pro & etc. Then when you have spell checked it, reviewed the grammar, checked the Fleisher-Kincaid reading standard, the word count, and paragraphs & etc. etc. Simply copy and paste the results into a Newsvine comment box. Of course the Newsvine compose window has its own spellchecker, which is something that I myself need to remember more often. :)

              ..... & Voila

Mr. Ford, I might of missed the part that deals with seeding - could you elaborate on when Newsvine keeps track of the seeds that you actually cast.. to the ones that your Leaderboard actually does not reflect accurately?

Or are they not counted every day.. but accumulative to once a month? Where a person's individual picture is / no picture is.. the text gives an individual the total sum so far that they have seeded.. but Leaderboard does not reflect the total?

              Thank You!

Here's the link, with better formatting.

              The comment said:

Oh......did I say I love the Arabic culture? Weird. I know!

              Ford,

I"m not sure if you can help but was wondering whenever I write article or seed link, is there a list of how many posters must participate in my thread to determine my earning?

Let me know and if you can't, could you ask the staff.

              Thanks. Take care of yourself.

Tried to find information about earning with more details but could not. Could someone explain how the earning really works? Do I earn based on each post and how much exactly?

Or based on each page and how much exactly?

Why no one replied to my inquiry?

                Thanks.

No one really knows the formula they use to calculate our earnings. We think it's partially based on pageviews. But our earnings also are based on how much advertising they sell in any given month.

tzia62, I am having the same problem. My opinions are not being posted, although I see them on my personal page. Strange, because the clock does show that I have 2+ minutes to edit my letter. I am a new user. Frankly, when I first tried to post to MSNBC articles, I never knew Newsvine was involved. There is nowhere to sign in to my Newsvine account on the MSNBC site. There is nowhere to click on to vote for an person's post. This is very difficult to use. Should I go directly to Newsvine and sign in first? And why aren't my posts appearing in the comment sections?

If it's one of your seeds, in the bottom of the comments you'll see:

REPLY and then three boxes: An up arrow to vote, an "!" to report, and then a trash can.

                  Click the trash can icon.

Hit return, then click on the blockquote icon. It togg;es to off. The reason that you cant do it before hitting return is because the whole paragraph that your blockquote is in will be block quoted (set aside with a different format.)

                  Hope this helps.

I think it's a bug in the program, that the block quote won't toggle back off. The way I get around it is to paste in the text I want to quote, hit "Enter", type my comment, then go back and block quote the text I want to quote (you don't have to highlight the whole thing, just position your cursor in front of what you want block quoted), then click somewhere in my comment text to toggle the block quote off. Bold is a problem, too, similar fix, only you have to highlight individual words completely.

Now if I could just get the strikethrough to work...

                  re: POLLS

I'm confused about creating a poll. Actually creating the poll seemed fairly straightforward. But then, after I clicked "publish it" it seems to have disappeared? Where IS the poll? Where/ how would one come across it? And how can I find it so I can see the results?

                  Thanks in advance...

                  So:

Step 1: Click on the Write Article option.

Step 2: Compose the article, add a headline, add tags, select groups, etc. (Tags and groups are optional, but more people will find your stuff if you use tags and post it to groups.)

Step 3: Create the poll and click OK to finish it. The poll isn't published for people to vote on yet, at this point.

Step 4: At the top, change the setting to "published" and then click SAVE.

If you do that, the article (and the poll) should show up on your column and in any groups you selected, if you selected groups. Then, if enough people comment on it or view it, it'll show up on the front page.

Looks like you posted that comment in February of 2010. You would have been sent a notice informing you that it had been deleted, and the opportunity to dispute the deletion at that time. If you don't remember what that comment was, I doubt that Brian will remember why he deleted it. Probably best to let it go.

You're right. Only noticed the date after i posted. But it still has me wondering. Everything was deleted.I complained to ask why. Found my column intact, and waited...nothing. I was a newbe, and can now see a couple of irritants...but don't think 'twas warranted. I like the concept of NV and am willing to chance another frustration like that. Like you said let bygones be. It has to do with the "interestingness" of your comment.

Looking at your column, I can't see that you're doing anything wrong. Look at the Leaderboard and see where you compare to everyone else.

I see you have lots of friends, but it wouldn't hurt to get a kazillion more. Then you would have more followers and possibly more comments from those followers.

                    Seed lots more articles.

                    Write more articles.

Much appreciated, Brian. I always like to learn how to do stuff a little better and how to find out where to go to go to find out.

I hope not a lot of people get confused, worried and feel they should hang back when they first come here. I found out quickly that its one great place for folks with big mouths, big ears and occasionally, big thoughts, to come jaw at each other. You learn stuff here...some you like, some you don't. That's called balance.

Login to your [kjpxxx] account, click 'Account' on the black bar, change your 'E-mail Address' field on the Account Information tab. Although since you registered another account with the email address you want, you may not be able to do that...hmm. I'll try to clear that out for you.

                    There's 2 ways:

In the Report Bug button at the top-right of this page, there is a form you can select to put in a request for a domain or screen-name change. I'm guessing you want a domain-name change.

The other option is click on Account from the front page, then click on Remove Account. Kind of drastic...It means starting completely over.
